FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN welcomes wheelchair athletes
Wheelchair athletes, Chaeli Mycroft and Anita Engelbrecht will be seen in action at the second annual FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN this coming Sunday, 15 May 2016.
“The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is an awesome event in that it focuses on the simple things – why we run,” says Mycroft. “To me running is special because anybody can do it. I love how everybody is supportive of one another on the road. I am lucky to have two really great running partners, James Chevalier and Brett Glen. For me the most important characteristic about a running partner is positivity and determination. With that the partnership can achieve anything. The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN has attracted so much attention. I am looking forward to sharing in the excitement with everyone. Our goal is to have fun, while raising even more awareness around disability and ability activists in athletics.”
“I love the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN,” says Chevalier. “It is the cycle tour of running in the Western Cape. I am looking forward to enjoying the ‘gees’ and running with Chaeli, followed by a beer on the finish line.”
According to Engelbrecht, running is in her genes. “My family love to run. It's fantastic to be able to live out my adventurous spirit. When Hilton Murray asked if I would take on this challenge with him, my immediate response was yes. He is a phenomenal human being and I admire his perseverance, determination and great sense of humour. I can’t wait to enjoy the route and scenery with him. We will be running as pace-setters and will make the best of every minute out on the road.”
Chaeli and Anita will make Comrades Marathon history on 29 May 2016 when they take to the road as the first ever wheelchair athletes to participate in the Comrades. They will be assisted by their running partners on the 89km downhill run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
According to Sue Ullyett, event manager for the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN, the wheelchair category has no effect on the rest of the runners, but instead only requires a little more planning from the event organisers in order to accommodate them. “We have built a ramp at the start and have provided the athletes with vehicle passes allowing them to be dropped off close enough to the start line. For safety reasons the wheelchair category will start five minutes ahead of the rest of the field and athletes have been asked to attach a visible flag to their wheelchairs. Chaeli has done some amazing things over the past year. We are honoured that she and Anita have chosen to participate in the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN before they head up to Comrades. We wish them and their team all the best for this challenge.”
